"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
As the district vice president of Manulife Investment Management in Montreal, Quebec, Andrew D’Iorio takes pride in his work. He’s been with the organization for almost 12 years, which accounts for nearly
the whole of his professional career after graduating from Concordia University with a bachelor’s degree in Management.
“The foundation of our business is being adaptable to different environments. Every year is different,” Andrew says. “2021 was more challenging because of the absence of face-to-face meetings.”
He believes one hallmark of a good wholesaler is being adaptable, which he and his team have demonstrated exceptionally well. By embracing the use of digital communication technology, they were able to continue providing support to their advisor clients at the level they’ve been used to. Through the use of various real-time video and audio chat platforms, they have unlocked more flexibility and efficiency in scheduling meetings, which he says has increased the number of contacts.
Of course, new expectations around being online and on-call for business have led to even more hurdles. “There has been a higher level of contacts across the spectrum. The volume of contacts that the investment advisors receive from the investment community has increased substantially,” he says. “Advisors needed to manage multiple priorities in their day-to-day work, and the investor’s appetite for information has increased as well during the pandemic.”
The new regulatory environment has also reshaped the investment product landscape, prompting advisors to find ways to simplify their business while remaining efficient. Even as many advisor firms undertake efforts to rationalize and right-size their suite of investment product options, new products being launched by asset managers and fund providers are growing in complexity to address new
market realities.
“The ongoing pressure on fees and demand for sustainable investments are also transforming the industry,” Andrew says. “This has pushed us to become product and subject matter specialists for advisors to help them navigate this new investment environment.”
Of course, adaptability, accessibility, and product expertise aren’t the only things that make a good wholesaler. To continue thriving in the business, he says they must also possess a burning desire to increase their knowledge about products, markets, taxation, and all other facets of the industry. That passion must also come through as they present their knowledge and ideas to advisors in the new era of Zoom and Teams meetings.
Another fundamental and vital necessity for wholesaling success, he says, is credibility and honesty. As specialists in the investment product landscape, they must be able to come across as trustworthy authorities and communicators. That requires performing across a whole array of dimensions including accuracy of information, showing a real interest in solving advisors’ problems, and cultivating a genuine understanding of an advisor’s situation.
“One fundamental principle that we make sure to follow is to not make assumptions,” Andrew says. “The way we avoid making assumptions is by asking the right questions that are pertinent to that advisor’s businesses, and by listening more than we speak.”
