"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
Wholesaler Chris Bisson has spent more than 12 years at Manulife, where he currently serves as the district vice president in the Barrie, Ontario area. His role involves management and servicing of existing business as well as promoting the growth of Manulife’s mutual fund, segregated fund, exchange traded fund, and separately managed accounts. Drawing from a record of professionalism stretching back more than a decade, he speaks with conviction when he underscores the importance of supporting advisors in their efforts to provide financial guidance to Canadians.
“I believe the value of advice has always been extremely important, now more so than ever. With how fast markets move and all the online brokerages with inexperienced Canadians becoming day traders, this is a dangerous recipe for wealth destruction,” Chris says. “In fact, recent surveys show that investors can earn up to 2.3 times more wealth over time with professional advice. Paying lower fees can come at a significant cost and clearly does not tell the whole story.”
To provide consistent and clear support to his advisor clientele, Chris says he has had to adapt to the new pandemic reality by adopting new modes of communication. As the demand for information and the need to answer questions reached fever pitch, he says speed became a key focus for his team as they continued to provide support materials and resources to their client base.
“In any profession, we are always faced with challenges and obstacles that we need to overcome,” Chris says. “That is why we all need to pivot and adapt to our current environment.”
While public health measures and travel restrictions that took hold during 2021 might have impeded the traditional way of meeting and conducting business, he says communicating through videoconferencing has unlocked a whole new world of opportunity, making it easier than ever to reach advisors.
The ability to meet with advisors across many different cities at the same time, he says, has proven to be advantageous in many ways as it creates more efficiencies. Even though he recognizes the benefit of communicating with clients at scale, Chris maintains that being able to understand the intricacies faced by each advisor and practice should be at the heart of a successful wholesaling business.
“We can help advisors and investors make better financial decisions if we better understand their individual practices,” he says. “It’s about asking the right questions, understanding each advisor’s business and client base, and having the mindset that we need to earn your business.”
While advisors can certainly get information about products by reading fact sheets, prospectuses, and offering memorandums, Chris makes sure he delivers value that goes far above and beyond product education. That means rather than just being a conduit for product intelligence, he goes the extra mile by taking the time to appreciate the inner workings of each advisor’s practice, and helping them determine which investment products could be most suitable for the needs of the clients they serve.
“I always lead with the value we provide versus the products we sell,” he says. “It’s important to
ask questions and really understand the advisor’s business, taking a true consultative approach.
Trust is everything.”
At Manulife Investments’ wealth business, Chris says he is honoured to work with some of the brightest and most successful financial advisors who care about making a difference in their clients’ lives, whether by helping young families save for their children’s education, enhancing seniors’ future retirement funds, and formulating wealth transfer strategies.
Raised in Oakville, Ontario, he now lives in Barrie with his wife, Lisa, and their children, Elise and James.
