"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
Christian Tucci has been with Manulife Investment Management for more than eight years, including just over a half-decade as district vice president for the southwestern Ontario area.
An alumnus of McMaster University with a degree in Economics (honors), he was introduced to the industry as an intern in 2012. His collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit made wholesaling a natural fit, and he has thrived in the business by adopting one simple principle.
“To me, the biggest principle to always remember is that both myself and the advisor are servicing the end client. I like to picture friends or family being the client who I don’t see behind the advisor,” he says. “In the busyness of the day to day, it can be easy to forget what we are actually doing: we are helping clients with their financial futures. By approaching everything with the end client in mind, I believe I am more genuine, and therefore more valuable.”
Looking across the Canadian landscape of investment, Christian sees an “exciting and inspiring” trend of product development. Responding to the ever-changing world and emerging demand from the general public, the industry is launching new offerings that include socially responsible investments, alternatives, and low-cost products.
As the pandemic has forced countless people to spend more time than ever online, access to information on investments is at an all-time high. That means when clients reach out to their advisors with questions, it’s not just to find out the facts and figures of a specific investment product they’re interested in.
“Advisors add a lot of value beyond product and I think increasingly, that’s their focus,” Christian says. “In this sense, I can be their ‘go to’ for product ideas, questions, analysis … I feel like wholesalers have become even more an extension of the advisor’s team this way.”
Throughout the COVID crisis, clients have been seeking more support than ever from their advisors, and that need for support is flowing through to wholesalers. For Christian, that has meant revamping his process to make responsiveness a top priority, using technological efficiencies to enable more flexibility in his day-to-day and ensure that he’s there when needed.
“As a social outgoing person, I miss face-to-face meetings more than ever. But over the past two years, I can confidently say I have been able to be in touch with advisors more frequently, for longer conversations,” he says. “In 2021, I spoke with more advisors than any other year in my career and I feel my value has never been higher.”
Driven by a strong sense of service and professionalism, Christian likes to keep his calendar full. He’s maximizing the benefits of technology, arranging for portfolio managers as far away as Boston to meet with advisors in London to discuss the specifics of certain product strategies. When not in face-to-face meetings or virtual calls, he actively checks in on clients to see if he can assist with anything.
“I think advisors can easily distinguish a wholesaler who is not enjoying themselves, not in it for the long term, and not committed to mastering their craft,” he says. “Wholesalers who commit to learning what they don’t know, changing what isn’t working, and always remember to enjoy what they are doing are typically the ones who do the best.”
Away from work, his life revolves around family, friends, travel, and sports.
