"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

With more than 15 years of professional to draw from, Eric Hudon-Dufour knows what it takes to succeed as a wholesaler in the Canadian investment industry.
“Wholesaling is a balance of two things: pure investment knowledge and a robust sale process,” Eric says. “Some will be better salespeople and others will excel in analytical skills, but you really need both at a similar level to gain credibility with advisors and to be able to raise assets in the region.”
Since he graduated from UQAM with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Commerce, he has made a point of continuing his professional education. Aside from becoming a CFA charterholder, he has finished courses and earned designations from the Canadian Alternative Investment Analyst Association and the Canadian Securities Institute. Those credentials have served him well throughout his career.
But today, the landscape of the Canadian investment industry is going through unprecedented disruption driven by changing investor needs, an increasingly difficult market environment, and rising regulatory pressures, among other interconnected forces. That means the types of products coming to market are becoming increasingly specialized – and wholesalers and advisors alike have to keep pace.
“We see more and more strategies originally created for institutional investors that are now available on the retail side. Whether it is alternative investments, such as long-short or market neutral strategies, or private investments, such as private debt, equity or real assets, they may really increase diversification and deliver a better client experience,” Eric says. “I believe it is our role to effectively explain how these strategies work and how they will behave depending on different market scenarios.”
It's not just the steepening curve of education that is transforming communication between advisors and wholesalers. The world is approaching the second anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, and virtual channels such as Zoom and Teams have become fully integrated into seemingly all facets of business. In many ways, adapting to this new reality has been challenging, but Eric says the early difficulties have led to real benefits and efficiencies.
“Although we are all tired of interacting virtually, especially in an industry that has so many human relations embedded in it, I believe it has become easier to talk to advisors,” he says. “There is something efficient in the way we can present in a videoconference that is very hard to replicate in an office or at a lunch meeting.”
The ability to make the most out of every interaction is something he considers very valuable; whatever the size or business model, he says having time to speak with advisors is a privilege. Each conversation is an opportunity to create a long-term relationship, which for him means bringing value to the table at every opportunity.
“I believe listening to the advisor’s challenges and needs is the key to success,” Eric says. “Many wholesalers will start their ‘tape’ and do every meeting the same way. It doesn’t work. You have to really understand the advisor’s business to be able to make a difference.”
He says he appreciates being able to work with some of the smartest advisors in Canada, whether in portfolio construction, investors’ business development, or financial coaching. As a fast-growing provider of investment solutions in Canada and one of the top 10 in terms of assets under management, Manulife Investment Management is made up of advisors who know that a solid performance, combined with a smooth investor experience and a reliable reputation, are the keys to successful investing.
