"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
With less than five years of experience as a wholesaler under his belt, Scott MacKinnon has already distinguished himself as a trustworthy and reliable sales professional among his advisor clients in Ottawa. And he credits much of that success to one critical philosophy.
“We have two ears and one mouth, so that we can listen twice as much as we speak,” Scott says. “I think you really need to ask the right questions and listen to the needs of the advisor and what they’re looking for from you as a potential partner to their business.”
While the ability to listen is a basic requirement in any profession, it takes experience and industry awareness to know what questions unlock the most meaningful opportunities for partnership. Through the guidance of some very strong wholesalers at Manulife, he says he’s learned what questions get to the heart of what’s important to advisors.
At the moment, one of the most important priorities is on the regulatory front. With the full implementation of the client-focused reforms as of December 31, 2021, regulators have introduced a more comprehensive set of KYP guidelines for wealth firms. For top-performing wholesalers like Scott, that’s meant educating advisors about the products on their shelves, and helping them consolidate and rationalize the offerings they’re responsible for staying up-to-date on.
“The landscape is changing quite dramatically,” he says. “You need to be up to date on the changes that are happening from a regulatory perspective, but also from a product perspective, because we’re seeing a lot of evolution in some of the products that are being sold.”
As educators and experts on investment products, wholesalers carry a heavy responsibility. But that’s been made a little lighter with the adoption of digital technology. With the use of Teams, Zoom, and other platforms, he says it’s easier than ever to be what he calls an “i-Wholesaler.”
Reaching people has become easier as they stay at home and work virtually, which he says has allowed them to be more available and responsive. But he also argues that in today’s world of work, it’s become somewhat more challenging to engage in effective communication. Still, as he looks out to the future, he considers the deeper adoption of new technology to be a net positive for the industry.
“I think it’s more effective to do things in person, where you’re able to sit down and actually put that time aside to discuss something, rather than going back and forth over email,” he says. “Overall, I think the wholesaler world is shifting towards a hybrid model of being on the road and also being virtual. It’ll be all about the wholesaler’s ability to adapt their messaging and their approach to the advisor’s needs.”
Having found his career in sales and capital markets as a natural fit after receiving a degree in Finance from Western University, Scott continues to improve his competencies by obtaining financial designations such as CIM, CFA Level 1, and currently, CFP. He acknowledges the support of his mentors at Manulife and the investments advisors that he works with every day in Ottawa.
Outside of his work and studies, Scott spends his time skating at the Rideau Canal, walking his dogs, and traveling the world.
