"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

With 21 years of investment industry experience, Tanja Mirazic has accumulated a wealth of fruitful relationships in the course of her career. At the foundation of that is a strong focus on not just meeting her advisor clients’ expectations, but pushing further to exceed them.
“My team’s motto is ‘raise the bar,’ at all times,” Tanja says. “Just when somebody says to my team, ‘Great job, guys!’ we take a step back and ask how we can make sure we’re doing even better today than we were yesterday.”
During the disruption from the COVID pandemic, Tanja says she and her team have had to reinvent how they operate from the foundation. Prior to March 2020, Zooms, Teams, and Webex were not well known in her circle of contacts. But by adapting quickly, they were able to ensure that face-to-face meetings still continued, albeit in a different way.
“I’ve been wholesaling in the territory for 17 years now, so we’re very fortunate to have deep-rooted relationships,” she says. “That made pivoting to make sure we continued to connect in a way that was comfortable for them so much easier than it would have been otherwise.”
Now, she says, everyone has become exponentially more accessible, rescheduling meetings isn’t the hassle it once was, and discussions have become more efficient. And like countless other female professionals, she’s playing the role of Wonder Woman as the boundaries between her work life and family life have blurred in many ways.
Looking across the product landscape, Tanja says recent regulatory reforms, specifically around know-your-product requirements, have created fierce competition for wholesalers to be included in advisors’ shelf of recommendations. It’s also upped the pressure for investment sales professionals to properly educate advisors on the role their products can play within clients’ portfolios.
More significantly, she sees the rising wave of ESG as a defining trend in the Canadian investment landscape. While it has long been on the radar of institutional investors, the events of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with mounting calls for action in the face of devastating environmental calamities, have propelled the conversation into the forefront.
“Gone are the days when clients would have a ‘set it and forget it’ attitude with respect to their investments,” she says. “Now they want to know what’s in their portfolios, and what portfolio managers are doing to change the world even as they seek returns. So as wholesalers, we now have to make sure advisors are equipped to speak about ESG and invest in line with clients’ values, and making sure they’re not being left for the advisor next door.”
As a veteran wholesaler, Tanja doesn’t underestimate the value of personal reinvention and thinking outside the box. She recalls how at the start of her career, her job was focused exclusively on product discussions. Since then, her role has evolved to include other responsibilities and capabilities – and her peers who didn’t elevate themselves have left the business.
“Today you really have to be holistic as a wholesaler because guess what? Advisors aren’t just discussing investment management anymore,” she says. “They’re also discussing estate planning, tax planning, and behavioural economics with their clients, so you have to know that language. You have to be an expert on technology and the capital markets … If you’re satisfied with the status quo for the next 10 years, you’re not going to survive.”
