Profile
David Poliquin knew early on that finance and taxes was his path, consistently finding ways to connect his work and interests back to markets and investments. What drove him was not simply an aptitude for numbers, but something harder to teach: a commitment to optimizing finance and tax planning at the highest level.
“I knew I wanted to push things further,” he says, “and not just do the same thing everybody else was doing.”
He joined BGY while pursuing his master’s degree and recognized quickly that the firm’s values matched his own. He has been building the firm – and himself – ever since. Today, BGY is home to a team of more than 70 professionals and serves over 750 households with investable assets above one million dollars.
In 2025, amid one of the more turbulent stretches in recent financial history, the firm did not lose a single qualified client. That figure, Poliquin notes with quiet pride, is one of the greatest achievements of his career.
The explanation for that loyalty lies in what BGY offers that most of its competitors do not. Poliquin’s practice has become known for a dual focus that is rare in the industry: investment portfolios that deliver strong returns while remaining genuinely tax efficient. For the firm’s core clientele – entrepreneurs, physicians, and high-earning professionals – this combination matters enormously. These are people with complex financial lives, where the gap between gross and net returns can define outcomes. Poliquin’s instinct for creative tax optimization, refined over years of study and practice, is where that gap gets closed.
His approach to client communication is equally deliberate. With more than 300 clients working in the financial sector, Poliquin can move quickly, skipping the basics and getting directly to detail. With clients who are less familiar with investing, he slows down, revisiting fundamentals and ensuring understanding at every step. The strategy, in both cases, is the same: make the client comfortable.
“I will never promise a return,” he says. “I prefer to stay conservative and over-deliver.”
That discipline extends to how he manages the firm itself. BGY operates according to three values that Poliquin describes as non-negotiable and shared by every member of his team:
rigor
integrity
creativity
In an industry that he feels is too often defined by sales targets and growth metrics, these values function as a counterculture. They are also, he argues, the real source of BGY’s competitive edge.
The challenge Poliquin identifies as most pressing – managing a relentless pipeline of projects and opportunities – is itself a reflection of how much the firm has grown. His answer is focus: channelling time, energy, and resources toward the right priorities, and seeing them through to completion even when the next opportunity is already appearing on the horizon. It is the discipline of a builder who has learned that doing fewer things exceptionally well is harder, and more valuable, than doing many things adequately.
