“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”
Kelvin Rampersad,
Carte Wealth Management
Christopher Dewdney first completed his studies in fashion, then moved on to study finance. However, his friend’s father warned him about the unpredictability and uncertainty of such a career and convinced him about the growth potential and stability that a financial career could provide. Another thing that drew him to finance was the intention to help more people, knowing that everyone objectively needs financial guidance and help, while in contrast, fashion tastes are subjective.
“I began delving into the world of finance, immersing myself in books, courses, and networking events,” he says. “This process not only expanded my knowledge of the field but also sparked a genuine interest in finance, its intricacies, and the impact it has on various industries. As I delved deeper, I realized the opportunities to combine my passion for creativity with the strategic and analytical aspects of finance.
“While my career shift from fashion to finance wasn’t initially part of my plan, I view it as a fortuitous turn of events that allowed me to discover a new passion and explore a different avenue for personal and professional growth.”
He’s currently the principal and a certified financial planner (CFP) at Dewdney&Co. In his role, he faces a number of challenges:
Despite the rigours of the job, Dewdney has achieved great things – number one on the list is being able to help improve the lives of his clients.
“The value I bring to my clients’ lives extends beyond the numbers. It’s about empowering them, instilling confidence, and helping them achieve financial well-being. By establishing strong relationships built on trust, active listening, and understanding their unique needs, I have been able to make a lasting impact on their lives.
“Seeing my clients transform their lives and achieve their dreams is the ultimate validation of my work. It motivates me to continually enhance my skills, stay updated on industry trends, and provide the highest level of service. The knowledge that I am making a tangible difference in the lives of my clients is the single biggest achievement of my career, and it continues to drive my passion for helping others achieve financial success and fulfillment.”
To do so, he places a premium on communicating and collaborating effectively with his clients. Open and transparent communication, he says, not only helps ensure they remain “on the same page” but also helps everyone feel valued.
“In my role, I emphasize the importance of education and empowerment,” he says. “I strive to educate my clients about financial concepts, strategies, and best practices, ensuring they have a solid foundation of financial literacy. I believe that an informed client is an empowered client, capable of making sound financial decisions and taking control of their financial future.”
