“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”
Ken Dixon,
Dixon Insurance Services
An eminent wealth management professional, Thane Stenner is a senior portfolio manager and senior wealth advisor with Stenner Wealth Partners+ at the boutique firm CG Wealth Management Canada and USA. His team’s average household investment account size is $27.385 million and they have grown their client assets under management by an impressive 184% over the last 12 months.
The son of a renowned wealth manager in the Vancouver area, Stenner may have been born into the industry, but he blazed his own impressive career path. Talking of financial metrics and trends at the dinner table and interactions with money-managing legends like Warren Buffett helped kindle his enthusiasm for the wealth advisory and portfolio management industry throughout his early childhood and teen years.
“These passions led me to pursue post-secondary studies at Arizona State University, where I graduated with an honours degree in finance with a specialization in investment analysis and portfolio management,” says Stenner. “An entrepreneur at heart, upon graduation, I began my own advisory practice, eventually growing that business to over 600 clients. I strategically chose to shift and work with a much smaller group of clients with the goal of providing exceptional client service at an extremely personal level, which has set the stage for our current, exclusive, niche national cross-border practice.”
From 1989 to today, Stenner’s highlights include becoming a rookie advisor at Scotia McLeod before assuming senior positions at Merrill Lynch, CIBC Wood Gundy, and Richardson GMP. He launched TIGER 21 Canada, a peer-to-peer network managing over $100 billion in assets; became the managing director of US-based Morgan Stanley in California in 2017, leading the Stenner Zohny Group of Graystone Consulting; and taking up his current role at Stenner Wealth Partners+ of CG Wealth Management in 2021.
Regarding his transnational career, he likens his US experience with the National Football League and domestic experience with the Canadian Football League.
Now back at the helm in Vancouver, he’s extremely proud of the team he’s built. Fifteen highly selective colleagues, finely trained through professional performance coaching, manage a select number of 48 key families across North America. “We have an approximate 3:1 key client to team staff ratio operating as a hybrid between in person/video advisory group to be optimally efficient,” says Stenner.
“I have been honoured with multiple industry awards over my career, but I consider my biggest achievement to be building out and mentoring my existing team of 15 professionals,” he says. “We have a wonderful group of high integrity, ambitious, and client-focused team members today that I am incredibly proud of.”
Meanwhile, Stenner adds only eight large new clients (with minimum household investment account size of at least $10 million+ or net worths of $25 million+) in a year, stressing white-glove quality treatment over quantity.
As a steward for some of the wealthiest families in North America, he prizes trust and confidentiality. His clients generally have a range of net worths between $25 million to 2 billion+. He prides himself on maintaining strong professional integrity and helping clients navigate the complexities of considerable wealth.
“Our team uses a unique survey/questionnaire with ourselves, our clients, and our families to identify how one approaches financial decision making,” says Stenner. “This Financial DNA Survey tool accurately depicts me as an ‘initiator,’ one who is driven, ambitious, and goal oriented. This has been in my DNA for as long as I can remember and has driven me to seek an exceptional experience for our team’s clients and ultimately growth in our team’s business. I tend to lead the charge, always pushing for new ideas, strategies, and techniques to drive superior client outcomes, always seeking to bring our professional wealth services practice to the next level.”

How does he distinguish himself among fellow brokers?
“I believe all brokers are working very hard in a difficult market,” he says. “However, I have demonstrated continued growth, advocacy and performance on my client’s behalf, which is now recognised [for 10 consecutive years] in the Elite Broker awards.”
In 1990, Dixon got started with FAI, working in claims and as a team leader. From the late 1990s up until 2003, he worked at FAI and Suncorp in underwriting and as an area manager at VACC, CGU (South East Queensland). From 2003 to 2012, he got into broking and eventually started Dixon Insurance in 2013. Since then, he’s accumulated numerous acccolades, including Elite Broker, Diversity and Equity, and Fast Broker awards.
During the pandemic, Dixon challenged insurers over the Quarantine Act application to insurance wordings. His argument was that the Quarantine Act does not apply as an exclusion, as the Biosecurity Act was invoked by the Morrison Government, and this was not a subsequent amendment to the Quarantine Act. The test case in the Appeals court was won for Dixon’s client with a unanimous five-judge verdict.
He remains focused on transport, manufacturing, motor trade, engineering and large farm clients.
What are his plans for the future?
On a business level, “more of the same. I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes.”
On a personal level, Dixon invests significant time, effort and funds, along with his GT3, to support many charities through his passion for motorsport. From participating in and sponsoring the Thunderbolt Run (which provides tens of thousands of dollars in support for Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer), to organising and running the Track Knights for Amira charity night where 28 Exotic Supercars raised funds through passenger laps in wet conditions, Dixon states “this is our time to give back to the community and those in need. My friendships and association with those seeking to do the same, allows us to contribute to those less fortunate and raise funds and awareness”.
He adds: “To be able to give back to the community is rewarding and fulfilling. I am honoured to be in a position where I can raise funds for those less fortunate and in need.”
