An unwavering belief in the power of choice has led Worldsource Wealth Management (WWM) to create its independent dealer model (IDM), which marries entrepreneurial spirit with the access to investment solutions and technology that advisors need to guide their clients through all phases of their financial journey. Respecting independence and empowering their partners with freedom of choice was the key to WWM’s selection as a 5-Star Brokerage for 2022.
“We’re excited to be recognized, and humbled by the fact it has led to us winning this distinction,” says Doce Tomic, head of wealth management. “For us, the IDM was built for advisors who value freedom and entrepreneurship. Our industry is evolving rapidly, and our model allows advisors to access customized options that meet their needs so they can focus on their clients. That’s the advantage of being one of the few truly independent dealerships in Canada.”
Tracing its roots back over 30 years, Worldsource Financial Management was established in 1989 as an independent mutual fund dealer, and Worldsource Securities was created in 2002 as a full-service investment dealer. This stability in ownership provided by its parent company Guardian Capital Group has allowed Worldsource to realize its vision of bringing the highly successful US RIA model, on which the IDM model is based, to Canada.
A perfect example of WWM delivering on its model is the work they initiated on the Client Focused Reforms (CFRs) that came into effect in 2021 and introduced a client best interest standard. The company looked at the CFRs as an opportunity to educate in advance of the implementation of the reforms.
“In our view, the CFRs were intended to ensure that a client’s best interest was at the center of the dealer/advisor/client relationship,” says Richard Rizi, Vice President, Investment Services. “We worked tirelessly to ensure both we and our advisors were prepared to meet the CFR’s requirements.”
This proactive approach also extends to their product shelf, with WWM being among the few mutual fund dealers to offer ETFs, liquid alternative funds and exempt market products. While some dealers used the CFRs as an opportunity to cull their product shelves, Worldsource saw an opportunity to expand the product types made available to investors because they believe that choice is always in the clients’ best interest.
On the sustainability front, WWM became a member of the Responsible Investment Association (RIA) in July 2021, and its parent company, Guardian Capital Group, recently announced it would balance annual carbon emissions firm-wide beginning in 2022. “As a dealer with the ability to lead by example, we want advisors to feel confident they have partnered with a firm that stands up for what is right,” says Tomic.
Yet WWM is not resting on its laurels. “Our approach has been met with increasingly positive feedback by both current advisors as well as prospects,” adds Tomic. “We have a number of exciting plans for 2022 and beyond and we are extremely excited for what the future holds for us.”
