Profile
Josh Nakesch’s book of business at Kinsted Wealth started from zero, with no clients on his first day in 2018. He has grown alongside the Calgary firm’s own trajectory since he got a seat on its board of directors.
“When the opportunity to join Kinsted came up in 2018, I took it because it felt right – a small, independent firm with a genuine investment philosophy and people I respected,” says Nakesch, now a senior wealth counsellor and CFA charterholder. “I didn’t know then that I’d still be here eight years later, sitting on the board and doing the most meaningful work of my career.”
Kinsted has nearly doubled its assets under management over the last two to three years, growing from around $1–$2 billion, while adding new referral partners, systems, team members, and platforms such as Kinsted Online.
Nakesch’s own book is part of that trajectory, but he measures his career by something else. “The book is the outcome,” he says. “The trust is the achievement.”" He points to the clients who have stayed with him for years, who refer their family and friends, and who call him when something important is happening in their lives as the real measure of his success.
He builds trust the same way for everyone he works with, whether clients, referral partners, or junior colleagues. “If people don’t trust you, none of it works. I’ve tried to earn that trust consistently by being honest, by following through, and by always putting the client’s interest ahead of my own.”
Much of his professional discipline traces back to Royce Baker, Kinsted’s founder and board chairman, who has mentored Nakesch since he joined the firm in 2018 and given him real responsibility early in his career. Without a long track record in those early years, Nakesch says he built trust by asking more questions and being genuinely curious rather than performing confidence he did not have. He credits consistency and genuine curiosity, paired with relationships built over years with accountants, lawyers, and other professionals who serve the same clients, as much as any single achievement in building his early reputation.
Kinsted’s growth has tested Nakesch’s ability to stay fully present for clients, even as new partners, systems, and platforms multiply around him, and his responsibility for the firm’s direction grows. He manages it by being disciplined about protecting time for clients, on the belief that growth is only worth having if it does not come at the cost of the relationships that built it.
Nakesch calls the Rising Star recognition “affirming rather than adjusting.” For him, it confirms that his focus on client relationships, firm building, and developing the people around him has been the right call all along. His ambitions have not changed. He wants to help grow Kinsted, an independently owned discretionary portfolio manager, beyond Calgary, develop the next generation of advisors, and serve more clients at the same standard it holds itself to today.
