Profile
Mordechai Kuhnreich, a wealth advisor and portfolio manager at Wellington-Altus Private Wealth, measures his work by moments that have little to do with markets. When one client faced a sudden health crisis followed soon after by the loss of her husband, Kuhnreich coordinated with lawyers and accountants to help untangle the family’s finances at a time when they needed it most.
In another case, he helped an elderly widowed client avoid losing roughly $250,000 to a suspected real estate scam. Concerned about the investment she was considering, Kuhnreich contacted compliance and ultimately drove to the client’s home, where he was able to intervene before she transferred the funds. A third client, an elderly widow, had let years of mail go unopened. Working through it with her, Kuhnreich uncovered more than $1.5 million in assets she did not know she had, including uncashed RRIF cheques.
“These experiences have reinforced for me that wealth management is ultimately about much more than investments,” he says. “It is about being there when clients and their families need someone they can trust.”
Sustaining that trust, Kuhnreich says, became easier with the authority that came with becoming a portfolio manager, a milestone that let him manage portfolios on a discretionary basis. He can keep portfolios disciplined and consistently rebalanced without waiting on client meetings, freeing that time instead for retirement planning, taxes, estate planning, and the bigger financial decisions clients face. Kuhnreich takes a broad view of portfolio construction, combining stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, private investments, and private placements where appropriate. His goal is to build portfolios with the sophistication of an institutional or pension-style approach while keeping the strategy understandable to clients.
Kuhnreich traces much of his approach back to Darius Muica, who hired him at Manulife Securities straight out of school and has been his business partner for more than 10 years. Muica taught him early on to surround himself with people who complement his strengths and are willing to challenge his thinking, a lesson layered onto years Kuhnreich spent cold calling and building a business from scratch. “That experience taught me that there is no substitute for putting in the work,” he says.
He credits communication, patience, curiosity, and persistence, along with an educational approach with clients, for building his reputation early, alongside a near-obsessive interest in finance and investing that keeps him researching and challenging his own assumptions.
Kuhnreich sees his relative youth as an advantage rather than a limitation with clients, since it lets him build a modern, technology- and AI-enabled practice from the outset. “I can potentially be alongside them throughout their entire retirement and, in many cases, through multiple generations of their family,” he says. “That creates an opportunity to build the kind of long-term relationship that goes far beyond managing an investment portfolio.”
Balancing that availability with protecting time for his own family remains an ongoing focus, managed through the same use of technology to cut down on administrative work. “It reinforces how ambitious I am about continuing to build my practice and my commitment to delivering unparalleled client outcomes,” he says of his Rising Star nomination. “I don’t view recognition as an endpoint.”
Kuhnreich wants to keep improving as a portfolio manager, expand the resources available to his clients, and build a reputation for exceptional service, including within Toronto’s Jewish community, where he hopes to give back.
