Profile
Tom Hall’s path into financial services grew out of a passion for technology and solving big problems for Canadian professionals and consumers. More opportunity than planned, the industry soon pulled him in.
“Coming into wealth management without decades of industry experience meant I didn’t have many preconceived ideas about how things were supposed to work,” he says. “That made it easier to ask basic questions, challenge assumptions, and look at long-standing problems with fresh eyes. The important part is balancing that perspective with enough humility to listen to the advisors who understand the industry far better than I do.”
The same mindset shapes how Hall works every day, moving quickly, staying curious, and focusing on the underlying problem. Technology changes rapidly, he notes, which means continually learning while staying grounded in the problems customers are trying to solve.
He carries that same balance into building trust, which he considers the industry’s biggest challenge. Impressive technology and self-described AI experts are not in short supply, Hall explains, but connecting that technology to real problems for real advisors in a way they can trust is the hard part. “I deal with that by staying close to advisors, understanding the problem before proposing the technology, and making sure what we build provides practical value rather than innovation for innovation’s sake,” he adds.
The co-founder of Cloven considers building both the product and its credibility his biggest achievement, one that goes beyond the technology itself. Hall says the work that matters more than the product itself is earning the trust of major national MGAs, since winning the confidence of organizations responsible for thousands of advisors is the harder half of the challenge.
Hall built that credibility quickly. Without decades of experience to lean on, he had to ask a lot of questions, listen carefully, and earn integrity through execution, turning what he and his team learned from advisors into useful products fast. He credits speed, curiosity, and the ability to communicate across different groups for building his reputation early, moving fluently between conversations with advisors about business problems and developers about technical solutions.
“I tend to get to the core of a problem quickly, ask the questions needed to resolve it, and then execute,” he says. “I’m also fortunate to be able to speak both ‘developer’ and ‘advisor,’ which helps me bridge the gap between what technology can do and what advisors actually need.”
Of his Rising Star award, Hall sees it as a signal rather than a shift. “It’s meaningful recognition that the impact we’re making in the industry is being noticed,” he says. “More than changing my direction, it reinvigorates me to double down on it.” Over the next five to 10 years, he wants to keep applying the most innovative technology available to help advisors better serve their clients’ financial well-being, one of the most important aspects of their lives.
