“Understanding each advisor, what they need, and how to communicate depending on their personality can only come from experience and a high degree of professionalism”
Brent Paul,
Mackenzie Investments
Brent Paul’s interest in finance began in 1996 when he was 18 years old.
“My father was always interested in investments and one night he took me to a seminar. I listened to a group of financial advisors present and I was hooked,” he recalls. “Not many people at 45 can say they began their career at 18.”
Now district vice president at Mackenzie Investments, Brent began his career at The Financial Planning Group before moving to Fidelity Investments in 2000.
With 28 years of market experience under his belt, he has been through the technology bubble and the financial crisis, to name a few challenging periods. “Sometimes the best way to discuss these types of events is to actually have lived through them,” he shares.
Joining Mackenzie in 2015, Brent in his current role works alongside advisors to provide solutions tailored to individual client needs.
“Working with hundreds of advisors and consequently, hundreds of different types of personalities, you have to be a bit of a chameleon,” he says. “Understanding each advisor, what they need, and how to communicate depending on their personality can only come from experience and a high degree of professionalism.”
Brent has won the Mackenzie Everest Award twice throughout his time at the firm, citing the achievement as a career highlight.

As a product manager, Rios knows that success is all about prioritizing and making trade-offs. The VP continually strives to find a balance between upskilling her team and herself.
“The more capable my team is, the more they can take on and allow me to tackle difficult problems, of course, but there is always a balance between the longer-term training and needing to get some work done in the short term.”
While Rios admits she doesn’t always get it right, the VP takes every experience as an opportunity to grow and learn. “I find a lot of value and enjoyment in trying something new, and excitement in not knowing what problem needs solving on a given day.”

He says, “This award recognizes a variety of different categories and to win, you need to achieve a first-place position in one of the designated categories. Winning it twice in two different areas has been my biggest achievement so far.”
As a leader in his field, Brent is committed to delivering best-in-class expertise to clients. To stay up to date on market trends, the VP tunes into business shows and listens to podcasts.
“I always say I never want to talk about a product today that I’m going to have to apologize for a year from now. Consistency, educating the advisors on what they own, and why it’s performing the way it is, are all part of keeping our clients informed.”
Accordingly, Brent’s strongest quality is his ability to establish and foster trust.
“I don’t come across as a slick salesperson and the feedback I have received from my clients is that they appreciate my honesty, consistency, and down-to-earth approach.”
Reflecting on the keys to his success, the VP notes that it is often the little things that have the greatest impact.
“I’m a big stickler when it comes to attention to detail. Everyone can do the big things well, but not everyone can do the little things. Making sure we have a core focus on things that we can control is paramount to our success,” he says.
