Formed in 1988 by industry veteran David LePoidevin, LePoidevin Group at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management currently manages more than $2 billion in client assets and has offices in Vancouver and Toronto. It’s a tight-knit team consisting of research analysts, traders, a financial planner, and administrative associates, some of whom have been working alongside LePoidevin for more than two decades.
As the business has grown, David has built a large and diverse team to service his clientele, including two experienced portfolio manager partners, Marc Rinfret and Fletcher Hemmons.
David entered the investment industry in 1986 and, during his early years, focused on the bond market. While today bonds are no longer attractive, David exercises his thorough understanding of financial markets to find investments that consistently deliver optimal client outcomes. David believes client retention and loyalty, along with the addition of new clients, can be attributed to his team’s ability to navigate difficult markets.
“Our team’s biggest growth in assets came after the 2008 financial crisis as we had successfully predicted the financial collapse and took measures to protect our clients,” David says. “The 2020 and 2021 pandemic presented another set of difficult market conditions that we successfully navigated. In fact, in 2021 we created over $350 million collectively for our clients. Because of the positive client outcomes we achieved in 2021, we are now being rewarded with a record number of client referrals.”
As a team that closely studies financial market history, and utilizes a number of independent research sources, LePoidevin Group prides itself in having an autonomous view of the market. During the recent Covid pandemic, LePoidevin Group noticed an unusual trend developing. Global money supply was growing at its fastest pace since the end of World War II. For the team, history suggested that inflation would rise and interest rates would follow, thus resulting in falling bond prices.
“As rates started rising we moved our clients away from fixed rate bonds towards reset and floating rate preferred shares. This was a wise decision as we’re now seeing a generational opportunity in preferred shares,” David says. “Our approach continues to be rooted in asymmetric risk/reward and we love buying undervalued assets. More recently, we cut our clients’ portfolio exposure to overvalued sectors, such as Tech stocks, correctly anticipating that they’d come under pressure as interest rates started to go up.”
As many other advisory practices turn to model portfolios, such as the traditional 60/40 balanced portfolio, LePoidevin Group continues to favour hands-on, independently researched, active discretionary management to search for pockets of the market where valuations are attractive.
“It’s a lot more work to do it that way, but I think the results speak for themselves,” David says.
“Now, we have much more frequent recognition awards because we want to celebrate people staying at CAAT and recognize the contributions that they bring to the organization”
